View propertyWith spectacular countryside and small coastal villages, the Portmahomack area is rural and a little rugged. Out on the Tarbat Peninsula, 50 miles north of Inverness, this part of the Highlands is a spectacular site.
Portmahomack is a quaint harbour village with white-painted cottages overlooking the boats in the water. There is a small sandy beach and a fishing pier to discover, plus a handful of shops, cafes and pubs too. The Tarbat Discover Centre is on the fringes of the village where you can learn about the Picts, Norse and Medieval artefacts on display. Tain, a historic town, is a 10-minute drive away for a larger range of eateries and places to shop.
On the road leaving Tain is the Glenmorangie Distillery where you can book a tour and a tasting. If you’re in the Highlands, you have to sample a local whisky and this is one of the best. Dornoch has a fine beach, an interesting museum and a cathedral that first opened its doors in 1239. There is plenty to see in this seaside town so be sure to spend some time here.If golfing is your sport, then you’ll be spoilt for choice. With Tarbat Golf Course, Royal Dornoch and Tain Golf Course all within easy reach, you can select your favourite green.
The northern Scottish Highlands is an excellent place for walking. There are routes that will take you through woods, around lochs, across hills and beside the sea. You could see different scenery every day of your holiday if you planned it well. With towns, villages and fascinating museums to visit too, this really is an area to remember.
