Cairngorm Mountain near Aviemore is the best-known ski and snowboarding area of Scotland. In the winter the slopes are busy with people enjoying the snow. In summer, climbing and hiking are the things to do.
Aviemore is the main tourist hub and is busy all year around. There are shops, eateries and great places to drink in the village and it’s the starting point for many walking trails. Nearby, Rothiemurchus is the centre for outdoor pursuits of all kinds. You can book sessions of quad biking, clay pigeon shooting, archery and pony trekking.
There is something for all ages and abilities here. At Carrbridge, there is the Landmark Forest Adventure Park where families can walk along a treetop trail, ride on a water splash rollercoaster and climb on challenging playgrounds.
The Highland Wildlife Centre is 10 miles from Aviemore where you can see tigers, leopards, red pandas, wolves and polar bears. There is a lot to learn in the education centre, and you can enjoy scheduled feeding times too. For a ride on an old steam train, visit Strathspey Railway where a 10-mile section of track has been painstakingly reinstated.
