Activities in and around uernmore

This property has a romance to it to match its name. The factory in question was, literally, a cottage industry, which supplied hats to the great and the good of nearby Lancaster and the surrounding district.

The cottage itself has been lovingly restored into a contemporary holiday home with everything the modern visitor could want. A private, secure garage is part of the cottage building, so there’s no need to worry about parking or intruders. The stone building, meanwhile, is perfect proof against the elements, which this part of north Lancashire has plenty of. The stone wall around the garden and patio area feels like part of the countryside; meanwhile, it’s small enough to look over and see the rolling hills of the Forest of Bowland AONB.

Also called the Bowland Fells, this amazing area is nicknamed the Switzerland of England, due to the amount of hills in the area. For the healthy and adventurous, there are lots of mapped and signposted walks across the area. The local tourist board also has Foodie Forays, and the Fells are home to some rare birds and wildlife. If the weather’s amenable, a long walk in this countryside is perfect for taking in nature and building up an appetite.

Just to the east of Quernmore (pronounced kwor-mer, by the way), lies the historic city of Lancaster, county seat of Lancashire. The city is dominated by Lancaster Castle, which overlooks the River Lune. There are plenty of guided tours of the castle and city, which is something of a hidden gem in this part of the country. Again, a generally peaceful atmosphere pervades the streets, and the fabulous Williamson Park has a butterfly house, plus some woodland walks. The Irish Sea coast is also right on the doorstep.
