Static caravans sometimes cause confusion when people are considering what type of residence to choose for a holiday. As they are often mentioned along with holiday centres, caravan parks and country resorts, the details of what constitutes a static caravan can be lost in the amount of choices to be made. In fact, for many people, especially families, static caravans are the ideal type of holiday residence.
If it helps, you could think of a static caravan as one without wheels. In fact, some actually do have wheels, but they don't get used. Wheels are for towing, and static caravans don't get towed anywhere, except to their final destination, which is where they stay. This gives them a range of advantages over both touring caravans and other types of static residence.
Touring caravans are limited in their design and fittings by the fact that they have to be towable. This makes them road vehicles, above all other things. They have to pass a whole range of safety tests, not least how long and / or wide they can be. Also, all their internal fixtures and fittings have to be capable of being secured in place. None of these restrictions apply to static caravans.
Basically, once a static caravan is in place, that is where it stays. Statics usually have central heating, and modern versions come with hot tubs outside. Inside, they can be every bit as comfortable and luxurious as a holiday cottage. Unlike cottages, however, static caravans can be sited in almost any location, from cliff tops to clearings in the woods. They also offer better protection and a wider range of features than are possible in tents. For this reason, a static caravan can be used at any time of the year, no matter what the weather.
Static caravans are usually hired out by the week. Power supplies and other amenities are charged for in weeks, and there will be a deposit to pay, returnable when you leave. Obviously, the site you rent from will carry out an inspection to check for any damage incurred while you have been using the static caravan. Of course, you don't just have to hire for one week; two week rentals are common, and caravan sites often rent out static caravans for much longer periods.
While it is not legally possible to “live” in a static on a caravan site, in fact many people do. Long stay caravan parks will be advertised as such, and are usually much bigger than holiday parks. The latter will often offer a mix of accommodation, from static caravans to chalets, huts, or glamping style tents, pods and yurts. These touring caravan sites with hot tubs can often be found in niche areas, next to woodland or at the heart of activity holidays. They tend to have a different feel altogether to long stay parks.
Luxury caravan parks are very much what they sound like. Perhaps because the word “caravan” still has some connotations for older generations of holiday makers, providers have recently gone out of their way to break these prejudices. Caravans were always intended as solid, comfortable living spaces, and the luxury camping industry has decided to remind people of this.
With this in mind, booking a luxury caravan holiday comes with a surprising range of choices. The sites and types of caravan available are designed to really whet the appetite of families, couples and groups looking for something different. With the popularity of glamping ever on the rise, caravan rentals look to take this one step further. They assume that, at the end of the day, people would still rather stay in something more solid than a tent.
The sites chosen for luxury caravan parks are, therefore just as you would expect for luxury glamping holidays. They are often on large country estates, with one area given over to the camping site. You can expect lakes for fishing, woodland for exploring and pony riding, and tailor made facilities on the site itself. Many posh caravans offer hot tub areas as part of the caravan's own footprint. As well as this, many luxury sites will also have their own heated swimming pools and restaurants.
The location of the caravan park will play a large part in the price of the rental. Those offering views over renowned natural features, such as those in National Parks, will usually be more expensive. Also, some sites are geared to particular types of customer, such as those who enjoy sports and particular outdoor activities. This can mean anything from golf courses on site to abseiling or activities specifically aimed at families with children of varying ages.
Generally speaking, booking a holiday can be significantly cheaper if you wait until near the date you want to travel. This applies to luxury caravanning holidays as much as to other types of break. Although some long stay parks like to have their births booked well in advance, those in the niche or luxury market sometimes find that they have spare capacity, especially during quieter times of the year. No caravan park wants to have empty accommodation, so they will often offer remarkably cheap last minute deals.
As with anything, it pays to shop around. One advantage of looking for a last minute deal on a luxury caravan rental is that you probably won't have to think about flights. This can seriously affect the price of a holiday, but as most caravan rentals are in-country, this shouldn't be part of the equation. Having said that, the Netherlands is opening up as a luxury caravan destination, although this is based on the premise that people will drive and / or travel by ferry from the UK and other nearby countries. Another proviso is that, if you're travelling from one end of the UK to the other, you may well want to fly. While last minute flights can be cheap, they also come with their own hazards for holidaymakers.
A luxury caravan holiday will not be at the cheaper end of the market, but choosing the right time of year can make a big difference in price. Online comparison sites might be the way to go, although temporary accommodation companies' own sites are increasingly advertising caravans, as well as home stays. Booking off-season is always cheaper, as much for luxury caravans for hire as any other. Be careful to check the site is open all year round most luxury caravans to rent have different rules based on what the park decides.
Caravan holidays offer wide open spaces, which is one of the things people love them for. This gives the opportunity for the whole family to have their own space, which is many cases means the family dog. Whereas you wouldn't expect to take your dog with you to stay in a hotel, many people would like to do just that when they go on holiday. As caravanning develops to cater for consumer demand, many parks are now pet friendly for this reason.
In truth, holiday camps have traditionally been more pet friendly than other types of destination. As they are based around the idea of family holidays, this just makes sense. Camping is also a long established type of getaway which people associate with taking their pets. Luxury caravan sites with hot tubs are a mixture of both traditions, with modern adjustments added to make the experience more comfortable than either.
Of course, camping sites will have to be licensed to accept pets. There are insurance and liability considerations for the providers, which will be reflected in the cost of the rental. While some holiday camp operators have been less than keen on this in the past, today, most realise that the price is well worth paying. Those with a real eye for detail incorporate pets into their site design, and their location.
As the majority of pets taken on holiday are dogs, caravan weekend breaks often offer walks on the grounds and nearby which are ideal for dog walking. Many camps are located near woodland, for example, with designated trails aimed at dog walkers and families. Check carefully before booking, of course, as hosting pets is not always possible, although this is quite rare. Obviously, you are responsible for your pet at all times, and will be required to sign up for this.
Caravans and Cornwall have a long history together. As the remotest part of England, getting there has usually involved travel, by both land and sea. Also, natives to the county often found themselves moving around for work. While tourism in Cornwall often meant touring caravans, more modern holiday makers are now turning to the static variety. Quite simply, Cornwall has some of the most stunning views in the UK, and the cliff tops, moors and coastline to see them from. With beauty spots dotted throughout the county, it's no surprise that there are hundreds of caravan holiday destinations here too.
Scotland offers a whole host of opportunities for holidays in the natural world. As a sparsely populated country, the cities house most of the country's people. Its huge, natural beauty is there to be explored, and has attracted campers for centuries. Touring caravans are also a very popular way to see Scotland, which has a road network second to none in the UK. Static caravans and luxury holiday parks thrive in the country, simply because there is so much to see and take in. The myriad views of the mountains, woodlands and lakes make it ideal for outdoor holiday locations.
Wales has two national parks and numerous areas of outstanding natural beauty. It also has an awful lot of coastline, as it is surrounded by the sea everywhere but in the east. These two natural blessings make the Principality an ideal location for luxury caravan parks and holiday homes. The Welsh economy also depends on tourism for economic survival, so has learned to make the most of its many natural resources. As some of the country is quite remote, touring caravans are also an excellent way to explore it. Static caravan sites are especially popular in and around coastal areas.
Unlike many of the other UK holiday destinations, Norfolk has the advantage of being flat. This gives it a number of advantages for non-urban holiday destinations, especially those involving caravans. Getting around the county is relatively easy, although much of it is very sparsely populated. The flat, low-lying countryside is perfect for holiday parks, and static caravan sites are particularly well suited to this landscape. Also, the Norfolk Broads and other water features spread throughout the county, giving plenty of opportunities for fishing, sailing and other pursuits. Luxury caravan parks are the ideal bases from which to take these holidays.
Alongside Cornwall, Devon is one of the most popular parts of England for caravan holidays. While almost as remote as its western neighbour, Devon has the advantage of being much bigger. It is dominated by Dartmoor National Park, but also has many miles of heritage and conservation coastline. Both touring and static caravan holidays are popular in Devon, for reasons of access and destination. Many tourist resorts offer posh caravan holidays, both in the countryside and by the sea. Devon also has many historic market towns and villages, as well as two major cities, whose outskirts are perfect for caravans
Yorkshire is the largest county area of England, if all its parts are included. It also has the largest area of national parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty in the country. Not surprisingly, these make Yorkshire a very popular destination for caravan holidays. While tourism in the county is well established, this has often been based in traditional villages and towns. With the grown of glamping and luxury outdoor resorts, however, more of the county is becoming accessible to the mixture of luxury and natural beauty these holidays offer. Both touring and static caravan breaks are becoming very popular.
The Lake District has been attracting tourists who want to get close to nature for centuries. It was for this reason that the area was designated the country's first National Park. Visitors were catered for by the market towns and villages across the region, but many visitors chose camping as the best way to feel part of the scenery. Caravans are not always associated with the Lakes, as it is so hilly. However, static caravan holiday parks have proved to be the answer for many holidaymakers. There are so many stunning sights to see, caravan parks are almost guaranteed winners.
With the choice available, cheap caravan weekends offer some of the very best in country holidays. The mixture of some outstanding locations, peace and quiet, room to roam and luxury at the end of the day are something to write home about. Whether you're looking for a romantic break for two, a real family bonding session, or just a week away from it all, these caravan holidays have everything you could possibly want. The natural blessings of Great Britain make it a holiday destination for people from all over the world. Some of the very best parts of these islands are best enjoyed with the time and comfort to take it all in.
